📌 Code Examples & Usage – DS18B20 Temperature Sensor Board for ESP-01 / ESP-01S

📋 Overview

This module is a DS18B20 digital temperature sensor carrier board designed to work with an ESP-01 or ESP-01S Wi-Fi module.

⚠ Important:
This product does NOT include an ESP8266.
You must plug in an ESP-01 or ESP-01S module for the board to function.

Once installed, it becomes a compact Wi-Fi temperature sensor node suitable for IoT projects.

⚙ Key Features

  • Sensor: DS18B20 (digital 1-Wire temperature sensor)

  • Compatible with: ESP-01 / ESP-01S

  • Wi-Fi provided by ESP-01 module

  • Digital temperature output (no ADC required)

  • Arduino IDE compatible

Ideal for:

  • Wi-Fi temperature monitoring

  • Home Assistant / MQTT sensors

  • Equipment temperature logging

  • Greenhouse & enclosure monitoring

⚠ IMPORTANT – Read Before Use

🚨 ESP-01 / ESP-01S NOT INCLUDED

🚨 3.3V ONLY

  • ESP-01 and DS18B20 are not 5V tolerant

  • Use a stable 3.3V supply (≥300mA recommended)

🚨 Limited GPIO

  • ESP-01 has only GPIO0 and GPIO2

  • Sensor data line is typically connected to GPIO2

📌 Power instability is the #1 cause of ESP-01 resets and Wi-Fi dropouts.

🔌 ESP-01 Installation

  1. Align the ESP-01 / ESP-01S with the socket

  2. Insert gently (do not force)

  3. Ensure antenna orientation is clear

❌ Do not hot-plug the ESP-01 while powered

🔌 Power Requirements

Parameter Requirement
Voltage 3.3V
Current Up to 300mA (Wi-Fi bursts)
5V tolerant ❌ No

✅ Recommended:

  • ESP-01 power adapter

  • Buck converter or LDO (≥300mA)

  • Good decoupling (10–100µF nearby)

🛠 Arduino IDE Setup (ESP-01)

1️⃣ Install ESP8266 Board Support

Arduino IDE → File → Preferences
Add to Additional Boards Manager URLs:

https://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json

Then:

  • Tools → Board → Boards Manager

  • Install esp8266 by ESP8266 Community

2️⃣ Board Settings

  • Board: Generic ESP8266 Module

  • Flash Mode: DIO

  • Flash Size: 1M (no SPIFFS)

  • CPU Frequency: 80 MHz

  • Upload Speed: 115200

📦 Library Installation

Install these libraries via Arduino Library Manager:

  • OneWire

  • DallasTemperature

🧪 Example – Read DS18B20 Temperature (ESP-01)

On most ESP-01 carrier boards:

  • DS18B20 data pin is wired to GPIO2

#include <ESP8266WiFi.h>
#include <OneWire.h>
#include <DallasTemperature.h>

#define ONE_WIRE_BUS 2 // GPIO2 on ESP-01

OneWire oneWire(ONE_WIRE_BUS);
DallasTemperature sensors(&oneWire);

void setup() {
Serial.begin(115200);
sensors.begin();
Serial.println("ESP-01 + DS18B20 ready");
}

void loop() {
sensors.requestTemperatures();
float tempC = sensors.getTempCByIndex(0);

if (tempC == DEVICE_DISCONNECTED_C) {
Serial.println("Sensor not detected");
} else {
Serial.print("Temperature: ");
Serial.print(tempC, 2);
Serial.println(" °C");
}

delay(2000);
}

🌐 Example – Wi-Fi Web Page (Temperature Display)

#include <ESP8266WiFi.h>
#include <OneWire.h>
#include <DallasTemperature.h>

#define ONE_WIRE_BUS 2

const char* ssid = "YOUR_WIFI";
const char* password = "YOUR_PASSWORD";

WiFiServer server(80);
OneWire oneWire(ONE_WIRE_BUS);
DallasTemperature sensors(&oneWire);

void setup() {
Serial.begin(115200);
sensors.begin();

WiFi.begin(ssid, password);
while (WiFi.status() != WL_CONNECTED) delay(300);

server.begin();
}

void loop() {
WiFiClient client = server.available();
if (!client) return;

sensors.requestTemperatures();
float tempC = sensors.getTempCByIndex(0);

client.println("HTTP/1.1 200 OK");
client.println("Content-Type: text/html");
client.println();
client.println("<h2>ESP-01 DS18B20 Temperature</h2>");

if (tempC != DEVICE_DISCONNECTED_C) {
client.print("Temperature: ");
client.print(tempC, 2);
client.println(" &deg;C");
} else {
client.println("Sensor error");
}

client.stop();
delay(2000);
}

🌡 Why DS18B20?

✔ Digital sensor (no calibration drift)
